Ontario Gov't Announces Plans for Competitive Energy Procurement

Government seeks to improve grid reliability and encourage growth

Province aims to attract new energy projects and create jobs

The Ontario government has unveiled plans for a large-scale, competitive energy procurement process aimed at improving grid reliability, encouraging the growth of the renewable energy sector, and creating jobs.

The procurement process will be open to all types of electricity generation technologies, including renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, as well as natural gas and nuclear power.

The government has set a target of procuring up to 2,500 megawatts of new electricity capacity through the competitive process, which is expected to launch in early 2024.

The move comes as Ontario faces a growing demand for electricity and seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

The province has also committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and the procurement process is seen as a key step in that direction.

Key Features of the Procurement Process

  • Open to all types of electricity generation technologies
  • Target of procuring up to 2,500 megawatts of new capacity
  • Expected to launch in early 2024
  • Aimed at improving grid reliability, encouraging renewable energy growth, and creating jobs

Expected Benefits of the Procurement

The government's announcement has been welcomed by the energy sector, with many stakeholders expressing support for the competitive procurement process.

"This is a positive step towards ensuring that Ontario has a reliable and affordable electricity system for the future," said Daniel Wilson, president and CEO of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

"The competitive procurement process will help to attract new investment in the province's energy sector and create jobs," added Wilson.

The government's plans for the competitive energy procurement process are still in the early stages, but the move is seen as a significant step towards Ontario's clean energy future.
