Richard Gutjahr: A Witness to Terror
A German reporter's on-the-spot coverage of two major attacks
From the Nice truck attack to the Berlin Christmas market shooting
Richard Gutjahr, born in 1973 in Bonn, Germany, is a television presenter and blogger known for his coverage of terror attacks. In July 2016, he witnessed the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice, France, while on sabbatical with his family. Using just his mobile phone, Gutjahr provided on-the-spot coverage for German national broadcaster ARD.
Gutjahr's efforts were caught on camera by another witness, 42-year-old Richard Gutjahr, who told the news agency AFP, "I stood on the balcony and saw how people..."
Gutjahr's eyewitness account and subsequent reporting on the attack have been widely praised for their accuracy and immediacy. He has since covered other terrorist incidents, including the Berlin Christmas market shooting in 2016.
